Anatomy of an IBC Tank
HDPE Bottle
The inner container is blow-molded from high-density polyethylene. It holds the liquid contents and is chemically resistant to a wide range of substances. HDPE is FDA-approved for food contact in its virgin state. Bottles are translucent or white and can be replaced separately from the cage.
Steel Cage
The tubular galvanized steel cage provides structural support and impact protection. It allows IBC tanks to be stacked up to 4 high when full and enables forklift handling from all 4 sides. Cages are designed to absorb impacts that would damage an unprotected bottle.
Pallet Base
The pallet is either galvanized steel or molded HDPE. Steel pallets are more durable and better for heavy-duty stacking. HDPE pallets are lighter and resistant to rot. The pallet provides 4-way forklift access and a stable stacking surface.
Butterfly Valve
The standard 2" NPS butterfly valve at the bottom of the tank controls liquid discharge. It features a quarter-turn handle for easy operation and an EPDM gasket for leak-free sealing. Cam-lock adapters can be attached for hose connections.
Fill Cap
The 6" (150mm) screw cap on top provides a wide opening for filling, cleaning, and inspection. It includes an integrated gasket for an airtight seal. Vented caps are available for products that generate gas or need pressure equalization.
How to Choose the Right Size
275 Gallon — Best For
- Standard liquid storage and transport
- Standard pallet racking (40" wide)
- Mixed container loads on flatbed trucks
- Small to medium production runs
- Residential water storage and rain collection
330 Gallon — Best For
- Maximum volume on standard pallet footprint
- High-throughput production environments
- Bulk chemical and agricultural applications
- Long-distance transport (more product per truck)
- Warehouse operations with high ceilings
